A 3-year-old Hilo boy died Friday from injuries he received after being run over by a pick-up truck in the Eden Roc subdivision in Mountain View, police said Monday.

The boy was identified as Treston S.C. Crowley of a Hilo address.

Responding to a 3:26 p.m. call, Puna patrol officers determined that the child was playing in a 1993 Dodge pick-up truck when he either put or knocked the shifter into gear.

The vehicle started to roll back in the driveway, at which time the boy jumped out and was run over by the vehicle, police said.

The child was taken to the Hilo Medical Center by fire rescue personnel. He was pronounced dead at 4:31 p.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Being that this death occurred on private property, it is not counted toward the official traffic fatality count, police said.
